Project Overview
Route 82 (Morris Avenue), from Caldwell Avenue to Lehigh Avenue, has a pedestrian crash rate greater
than the statewide average. As part of the Pedestrian Safe Corridor Program, several specific
measures were proposed to improve deficiencies and remove obstacles that prohibit safe walking
through the 2+ mile corridor. Nine signalized intersections and thirty-six total intersections were
studied and advanced to Concept Development Alternatives.

The Concept Development Alternatives include the following safety improvements:
  •  Wholesale traffic signal upgrades, including pedestrian countdown signal heads, traffic signal heads, and video detection
  •  Signal re-timing and overall corridor coordination
  •  Existing lighting evaluation and upgrades
  •  Additional signage and improved traffic striping
  •  Providing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant curb ramps

This project specifically addresses the compliance of existing curb ramps with the ADA guidelines. The
intersections along the corridor were evaluated to determine if the existing curb ramps meet ADA
requirements. If the curb ramp did not meet ADA requirements, an NJDOT standard curb ramp was
designed as an alternative at that location.

Estimated Project Schedule:
Preliminary Engineering: Begin April 2014
Final Design: Begin April 2016
Construction: Begin April 2018
